The first generic drug to become available in the United States will bring in roughly 5 million new prescriptions this year, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The pharmaceutical giant said Tuesday it plans to launch its first generic version of Levitra, a heart medication that treats erectile dysfunction.
“The market for generic medications is large, but there is substantial demand for generic versions of Levitra,” said Karen T. Davis, senior vice president for global sales and marketing at GlaxoSmithKline. “This will be a game-changer for men’s health, especially as more and more men are getting older.”
The market for ED drugs has been growing, with many patients now looking to buy generic versions of the same drugs.
The demand for the generic version of Levitra has led to a number of major generic drug deals, including one in 2006, which included Levitra and the generic version of Cialis.
In addition to generic drugs, Levitra also is used to treat erectile dysfunction, and Levitra’s patent expires this year, but it can remain available for sale.
Tadiz-based Bayer AG, based in San Francisco, said on Tuesday that the company expects to launch generic versions of its erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra, on the U. S. market by 2014.
The Levitra patent has been in effect since March. The drug is still under patent, and Levitra is still being marketed as a generic and available as a generic drug for the treatment of ED.
